The township of Stawell in the Western plains of Victoria was founded in 1858 after gold was found in the district. Stawell is ideally located on the Western highway (the main road between Melbourne and Adelaide) and on the northern edge of the Grampians National Park. This central position makes Stawell the ideal accommdation base from which to explore the interesting rock formations, waterfalls, canyons, scenic lookouts, unique flora and fauna in the Grampians. At Easter time every year the size of the town swells as the Stawell Athletic Club hosts the famous Stawell Gift, which is one of the world's richest professional foot races.
